A wooden Wawi board with the Jwé Kwéyòl logo, seeds in its 12 pits and a hand sowing seeds, on a table looking out to the Pitons in Saint Lucia

🫘 Wawi: the seed sowing board game, in Saint Lucian Kwéyòl

Wawi is played on a wooden board of 12 pits, 6 on each side, with 4 seeds in every pit. Take turns sowing seeds around the board and capture your opponent's. The first player to capture 25 of the 48 seeds wins.

Every pit counts its seeds in Saint Lucian Kwéyòl, so you learn your numbers as you play: an, dé, twa, kat, senk and on up.

How to play Wawi

  1. You own the 6 pits along your side of the board. Each starts with 4 seeds.
  2. On your turn, pick up all the seeds in one of your pits and sow them one by one into the next pits, going round the board.
  3. If your last seed lands on your opponent's side and makes that pit 2 or 3, you capture those seeds. Each pit before it on their side that also holds 2 or 3 is captured too.
  4. A move that would take every seed your opponent has captures nothing, and if your opponent runs out of seeds you must give them some.
  5. The first player to capture 25 seeds wins.
