Laplas: a smiling vendor in a madras headtie at a market stall of fruit, bread and fish, with two children and the mountains behind

🧺 Laplas: market bargaining in Saint Lucian Kwéyòl

Laplas means the market. Visit three stalls, greet each vendor the right way for the time of day, bargain for a better price and pay with the exact coins.

Prices come in the old money Saint Lucians still talk about: the chlen (24 cents) and the sou (half a cent). At the higher levels you also pay with Jwé Kwéyòl goud notes.

How to play Laplas

  1. Greet the vendor. The right greeting for the time of day puts her in a good mood.
  2. Hear the price, then ask politely for less, push for less, or accept.
  3. Watch her mood: a happy vendor says yes more often, a cross one may send you away.
  4. Count out the exact chlen and sou and pay.

Three levels

Beginner shows the English and the price in figures. Intermediate hides the English until you tap and adds a big buy paid in goud notes. Advanced is all Kwéyòl, with higher prices and tougher vendors.
