How to Play Laplas: Bargain in Saint Lucian Kwéyòl at the Market
Laplas means “the market”.
Goal
Buy something at three market stalls for a good price, speaking Kwéyòl and paying in old money.
How to play
- Greet the vendor. The right greeting for the time of day puts them in a good mood.
- Hear the price in chlen (24 cents) and sou (half a cent).
- Ask politely for a lower price, push for one, or accept.
- Count out the exact chlen and sou from your pouch and pay.
Scoring
Points for a kind greeting, every sou you save, paying right first time and a happy vendor. Push a cross vendor too far and you leave with nothing. Higher levels multiply your points.
Timer
No timer. Take your time and read what the vendor says.
Levels
Beginner
English under every line and the price in figures too. Prices up to 2 chlen.
Intermediate
Tap to see the English. Prices up to 3 chlen.
Advanced
Kwéyòl only, prices up to 4 chlen, and vendors start in a worse mood.
Tips
- Bonjou in the morning, bonnapwémidi in the afternoon, bonswè in the evening.
- Ask nicely before you push: a happy vendor says yes more often.
